Waste management (recycling incentives & accountability)

Problem
Waste management faces challenges in:
- tracking materials through collection → sorting → processing
- proving correct disposal/recycling
- incentivizing consumer behavior (deposit/return schemes)
- holding parties accountable for mishandling
What Catalyst enables (conceptually)
- Traceability: link physical items/batches to digital identifiers (QR/dot codes).
- Accountability: each participant signs actions (collection, transfer, processing).
- Incentives: programmatic rewards for verified recycling events.
- Auditability: regulators and partners can verify claims without trusting a single database.
A practical architecture
- Assign a code to a bottle/item (or a batch/container).
- When an item is deposited:
- scan item + bin
- record an event
- issue a reward (optional)
- When waste is transferred:
- record custody handoffs
- At the processing facility:
- verify the material meets criteria
- finalize proofs and settlement/rewards
Verify
- Run a pilot with a small set of bins and a recycling partner.
- Ensure the system records only the minimum needed data (privacy-by-design).
