Waste management (recycling incentives & accountability)

Problem

Waste management faces challenges in:

  • tracking materials through collection → sorting → processing
  • proving correct disposal/recycling
  • incentivizing consumer behavior (deposit/return schemes)
  • holding parties accountable for mishandling

What Catalyst enables (conceptually)

  • Traceability: link physical items/batches to digital identifiers (QR/dot codes).
  • Accountability: each participant signs actions (collection, transfer, processing).
  • Incentives: programmatic rewards for verified recycling events.
  • Auditability: regulators and partners can verify claims without trusting a single database.

A practical architecture

  1. Assign a code to a bottle/item (or a batch/container).
  2. When an item is deposited:
    • scan item + bin
    • record an event
    • issue a reward (optional)
  3. When waste is transferred:
    • record custody handoffs
  4. At the processing facility:
    • verify the material meets criteria
    • finalize proofs and settlement/rewards

Verify

  • Run a pilot with a small set of bins and a recycling partner.
  • Ensure the system records only the minimum needed data (privacy-by-design).
